Analog and Digital Delivery
by John Gatski, 08.01.2005
Welcome to the first edition of Pro Audio Review to be simultaneously delivered via U.S. mail and Internet mail. Because of the changing technology and the ease of access which the Internet offers to pro audio end users, we here at PAR are proud to offer two magazine delivery choices.
For those subscribers that choose a free digital subscription (you can also keep your concurrent mail delivered paper version), you simply click on the monthly e-mailed link and voila!, the digital magazine automatically opens up and the special software allows you to navigate in an easy-to-maneuver fashion, enabling shortcuts such as clicking on the cover headlines and going straight to reviews and bench tests that are highlighted on the cover.
You can peruse the table of contents to find your favorite columns, news and the reviews. You can even click on select editorial and manufacturer links from the ads and go straight to a company's web site without having to type in one single letter. Pretty cool huh?
Just think. If you are on the road and have access to the Internet, you can read the latest edition without waiting to get home or to your studio to pick up the latest issue.
The unique software, which is used by many major national newspapers and magazines for their digital delivery, also allows for off-line reading printing of pages and a three-month back-issue online archive. Our individual review archives, organized by equipment and software category will continue to be maintained on our web site, www.proaudioreview.com.

Analog Ain't Dead!
In this issue, PAR takes a look at two high-end analog processors -- one tube and one solid state. The D.W. Fearn VT-7 tube compressor and the Rupert Neve-designed Legendary Audio Masterpiece, an analog processor for serious mastering. Both products tested magnificently with mastering engineer Alan Silverman and PAR Studio Editor Steve Murphy. They show that, even with all the advances in digital, analog components still impart a desirable realism to the audio.
Debut of DiscWatch
This month we bring you the first of a series of profiles of music albums that have been released on CD, SACD, DVD-A, DVD-V, Dual-Disc or even vinyl. The album could be a classic, a forgotten gem or a new release. This month, Steve Murphy looks at the "digital cannons" of the famous Tchaikovsky 1812 Overture, the landmark 1978 Telarc digital recording by Eric Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pop Orchestra that was released first on LP, CD in the 1980s and now SACD. Telarc was a pioneering company in digital audio, and the insight into how the classical piece was recorded and its subsequent remaster from PCM to SACD is quite interesting.
