If you're an audio engineer and get one audio book for Christmas then it should be Glen M. Ballou's Handbook for Sound Engineers. The third edition from Focal Press is out. This doorstop of a book (even in paperback) is packed, and I mean packed, with almost every possible formula, definition, description, diagram, spec, schematic, comparison, etc. in every conceivable audio niche imaginable. This book is for serious audio engineers with emphasis on engineer.

It is organized by chapters and starts with audio fundamentals and theories. It graduates through electronics, recording techniques, sound design and testing parameters. Most applications (e.g. live sound, contracting, studio) are covered in some form but the emphasis is on recording studio equipment and techniques. More than a dozen expert contributors author the various chapters – including Ballou, Ken Pohlmann, Pat Brown, Peter Mapp, Ray Rayburn, Ted Uzzle and Bill Whitlock.
