Times change, but some things do stay the same. Take the MPC1000 ($1,499), the new junior member of the Akai MPC drum sampler series. Though it's about the size of a high school math textbook, it packs some serious punch both sonically and operationally.

Talos Basic Tube Guitar Amplifier
by Joe Beck, 1.01.2005
On paper, the Talos Basic tube combo did not generate a lot of excitement. Here was a $4,207 boutique amp, and it did not even have a reverb or any tone controls. But as soon as I opened up the box, I was hooked on the quality of this made-in-USA, hand-built guitar amp. The Talos Basic, I discovered, is an amp to use when you need to know what your guitar really sounds like!

by Russ Long, 7.01.2003
Since purchasing an original Small Stone in a San Francisco pawn shop back in '94 (I'm starting to feel old) I've been a fan of Electro Harmonix pedals. They offer a sonic texture that can't be duplicated by even today's most advanced plug-ins. My collection of Electro Harmonix pedals has continued to grow as the years have passed and I'm happy to say that they are used as much today as ever.

Aphex Acoustic, Bass and Guitar Xciters
by Russ Long, 7.01.2003
The Aphex Aural Exciter and Big Bottom processors have been standard fare in studio equipment as long as I can remember. More recently they evolved into plug-ins for DAW users. Now they have been incorporated into a trio of pedals designed for amplified music instruments. These three models have identical features and controls but are each voiced for a specific class of instrument.
