by Ty Ford, 6.01.2006
Edirol, as a business entity connected to Roland, knows a lot about disk recording. With the R-4, Edirol has created a box smaller than a George Forman grill that runs on eight AA batteries or AC power and records up to four tracks at a time, has two built-in mics and two built-in speakers.

Sound Devices 744T Portable Four-Track Hard Disk Recorder
by Ty Ford, 4.01.2006
There's something intrinsically spooky about pressing the record button on a Sound Devices 744T ($3,950). Even when it's recording up to four tracks of audio, it's not making any noise unless you stick your ear on the unit itself.

TASCAM CD-01UPro Professional CD Player
by Rich Rarey, 4.01.2006
I love the simple things: A pretty picture, a sonnet, a simple CD player. TASCAM, TEAC Professional Division, has delivered the latter of those in the new CD-01UPro CD player. Thankfully, this pro player doesn't record, convert, edit, chase timecode, or anything else but provide a well-considered cornucopia of ways to playback CD, CD-3 and MP3 discs.

Remote recordists have never had such high-quality, portable recording device choices for so little money. Case in point, is the new 24-bit/192 kHz sampling TASCAM HD-P2 stereo recorder, which won the PAR Excellence Award at the New York AES last October.

M-Audio MicroTrack 24/96 Flash Recorder
by Dr. Frederick Bashour, 3.01.2006
As profiled in Pro Audio Review's December 2005 issue, portable digital recorders using Flash memory storage exemplify one of the hottest-growing trends in pro-audio today. Sooner or later, every engineer will choose one (or more) of them; after seeing the selection available at the AES convention last fall, I chose M-Audio's MicroTrack 24/96, and have been using it almost daily ever since.

by Bascom H. King, 3.01.2006
The TASCAM HD-P2 is another fascinating two-channel solid state memory recorder of the new generation of machines utilizing solid state memory for storage unstead of a HDD, tape, or optical disc. This unit came with a 1 GB card installed which provides about 14.5 minutes of recording at the highest sample rate of 192 kHz and 94 minutes at 44.1 kHz.

by Ty Ford, 3.01.2006

Just when you thought the MiniDisc was headed off into the sunset, Sony reinvents the genre with Hi-MD; most significantly, a format capable of recording 16-bit, 44.1 kHz stereo files to standard or new 1 GB MiniDiscs. Supported recording formats include Linear PCM (16-bit/44.1 kHz) and ATRACC3plus.

Fostex DVD824 DVD-RAM Recorder
by Dr. Frederick Bashour, 11.01.2005
Say what? A $7,500 multitrack digital recorder which tops out at eight tracks at the lower sample rates and only four at the higher ones — and with only a 40GB hard drive available only as an option? Is that a misprint? No, gentle readers, this machine is not meant to compete with the considerably lower priced TASCAMs, Mackies and Alesises — not to mention Fostex's own 24-track hard disk recorders.

Audio recorders using Flash storage media have been around for awhile. What's new is that the cost of both Flash memory and high-quality recording devices using it have recently plummeted. This trend is well illustrated by the new Marantz PMD660 Professional Solid-State Recorder.

by Wayne Becker, 6.01.2005
Integra, a division of Onkyo has been working hard to produce useful products for the AV market. Their latest bid, the DPC-8.5 ($700) is a nonstop shop for a high quality, good value, and video playback device. But now I've spoiled the ending. Let's take a look and see if you agree.

TASCAM DP-01FX

by Richard Alan Salz, 5.01.2005

Sometimes simpler is better. Simpler products, if they are well designed, just let you concentrate on your work without interrupting your flow. Simpler can be hip too -- just look at the success of the iPod. It seems that TASCAM has been paying attention to this trend, as the DP-01FX is by far the easiest to use eight-track digital multitrack that I've ever used.

TASCAM CD-RW750 CD Recorder

by Wayne Becker, 11.01.2004
TASCAM's latest model CD-RW recorder is an upgraded version of the CD-RW700. The convenience of archiving recordings at will is a common necessity in the studio or conference room setting and having the ability to write when you need to and then "fix" a CD-R disc or erase a track or RW disc when full saves time and money.

Roland VS2400CD Mixer/Recorder
by Richard Alan Salz, 8.01.2004
I'll admit it; I'm a little bit spoiled when it comes to recording equipment. My first exposure to recording technology was back in 1985 when I was an intern at the now closed Sorcerer Sound in NYC, which had a gaggle of Studers and a custom 72-channel Neve console. At that time, a 24-track analog recorder cost as much as a Mercedes convertible!
